It can be fairly involved setting GA up on your site if you’re not familiar with it.  Allow an extended period of time to learn how to do it yourself, or better yet, pay me to set it up for you. I can do it quickly for you.

Once GA is setup correctly on your site, data will begin collecting on your site visitors. You should allow at least 30 days for GA to collect user data before making any marketing decisions based on the data collected.

However, it’s never too early to begin browsing around the GA interface to learn the basic setup and functionality.

After setting GA up on your site and browsing around the interface, you’ll quickly notice the enormous complexity. It’s obviously designed for a large corporation with a huge budget set aside to employ analytic experts to manage the system for them. However, since GA is a very useful free tool, my goal is to simplify it’s use to benefit small businesses on a tight budget.

After a close study of GA, I can see that much of the complexity is over-kill and not necessary for most small businesses, therefore, I’m going to give you a brief overview of some of the most important aspects of GA and how you can use this amazing tool to grow your business.

Identify Where to focus your marketing efforts to obtain big results with a small investment

1. How to uncover new untapped markets based on new user traffic to site

The Geo/Location Report located under AUDIENCE determines the location of a new site user using their browser’s IP address. The New Sessions metric identifies potential new markets based on new user traffic to your site.

In the GA sidebar on the left, go to AUDIENCE/Geo/Location. Here you’ll see a map overlay at page top, and below the locations are on the left, and metrics on the right.

Choose your location by city, and view the New Users metric for each location. This valuable data tells you how many new users your site received over a period of time for each location.

A location with a higher than average number of new users, where you have invested very little marketing, represents a new untapped market for your business

This location that you have just uncovered using GA is a smart area to target new marketing efforts to obtain big results with a small investment.

2. How to identify which traffic sources bring engaged users/ high quality traffic

Comparing performance of different marketing channels allows you to easily identify which sources send the highest quality traffic. Focus your marketing efforts on the sources with the most engaged users to obtain big results with a small investment.

In the GA sidebar on the left, go to ACQUISITION/All Traffic/Source/Medium Source/Medium, on the left, lists where all your web traffic comes from. For example, in Google/Organic, Google is the source (the place the users are before seeing your content) and Organic is the medium which tells us that users arrived at your content through unpaid search. To summarize, the source/medium, Google/Organic, means your users came from the google search engine by unpaid search.

Common you’ll see are search engine (for example, google), a domain (example.com), or direct (typed url in address bar). Common mediums are organic search (organic), cost-per-click paid search (cpc), web referral (referral).

Now that you understand source/medium, look at the metrics to the right. Bounce rate is a strong indicator of traffic quality.  Bounce Rate is defined as the percentage of visitors to a particular website who navigate away from the site after viewing only one page. Bounce Rate can be very confusing but I think I have a strong explanation for you.

Bounce Rate Example: If 100 people view a web page, out of that 100 people, 10 people leave your site immediately after viewing this page, and 90 people click into additional pages on your site before exiting, your bounce rate for that page is 10%.  On the other hand, if 90 people leave the site immediately after viewing this page and only 10 continue on to other pages in your site, the bounce rate is 90%.

You can easily see that most often a low bounce rate is desirable because it shows users are engaged with your site. Engaged users represent high quality traffic. Therefore a identifying a source/medium with a low bounce represents an engaged user high quality traffic source.

Examine your source/mediums to find those with the lowest bounce rate and you have identified the traffic source to target new marketing efforts to obtain big results with a small investment.
